The
"Echoes of Swing Orchestra" was formed in 2000 by the
English trumpet player Colin Dawson. "ESO" combines the German
Swing quartet "Echoes of Swing" and four "Swingcats".
The new formation has grown out of their mutual love of authentic swing. "ESO" play music from the recordings made by Teddy Wilson (1912-1986) for Brunswick Records in New York between 1935 and 1942. Pianist/composer/arranger Teddy Wilson was asked in 1935 to hire the best musicians arriving in the city to play on these recordings. The most striking recordings are those with Billie Holiday |
and the different line ups are a true “Who’s Who”-list of the swing era: Roy
Eldridge, Harry James, Lester Young, Benny Goodman, Red Allen, Ben
Webster, Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges, Al Casey, Milt Hinton, Gene
Krupa... These
short masterpieces form an impressive inventory of the spirit and wealth
of jazz at the time. These highly diverse recordings were rewritten in their entirety by Colin Dawson for the eight-strong formation. ESO’s acoustic performances of these works never cease to enchant and delight. |
